The Chic Pilot's Watch.

In the early 1980s, Ernest Schneider, the CEO of Breitling caught wind that a renowned Italian Jet team were looking for a new chronograph for their pilots. The watch had to be super functional but equally elegant - after all, he was dealing with Italians. Being a pilot himself, he understood pilots often returned with broken watch crystals as they would hit it against the cockpit's metal frame on their way out.

This led to the design of the four protective “rider tabs” that became the watch's signature look. After its re-introduction in 1984, the Chronomat became one of Breitling's most successful models to date.

"Intense dogfighter by day, cocktail sipper by night."

The design language combines modern and traditional elements - we consider it neo-vintage given its late 90s production run. The 38mm stainless case is a perfect canvas for what the watch has achieved. It's got the size and heft for a functional sports chronograph but compact enough to call it handsome. The use of monochromatic silver keeps the dial busyness at bay while the guilloche pattern elevates the sophistication. A handmade navy calfskin leather strap adds a touch of colour to bring it all together. While not commonly known, the applied Breitling logo is made out of 18K white gold but there's no need to brag because we like to keep it discreet, right?

Speaking of functionality, this watch packs a lot. A date, chronograph, Tachymeter and a unidirectional bezel with four "rider tabs" - everything a pilot would need. In addition to protecting the recessed sapphire crystal, the 15 and 45 minute "rider tabs" can easily be swapped to create a countdown bezel if preferred. The automatic movement is a Breitling caliber B13 based off the Valjoux / ETA 7750 -  a tried and tested work horse.

Bottom line: this versatile, sporty chic Breitling Chronomat will have you covered from the cockpit to your next dinner date.

This watch shows little signs of wear.

The case is in great condition with superficial scratches at the case back from handling.

The sapphire crystal, hands and dial are all in mint condition.

The lume plots have aged to a cream colour and still exhibit some glow.

The unidirectional bezel rotates smoothly with a little bit of give in the opposite direction. This is typical of vintage Chronomats.

The leather strap with stainless buckle has been lightly worn with plenty of life left.

The automatic movement has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
