Sunrise at Côte d'Azur.
As the morning sun rises over the shimmering Mediterranean, the gentle sound of waves mingles with the awakening city below. From a balcony in the south of France, you watch as birds glide effortlessly through the air, the curve of the coastline mirrors that of the Cartier Riviera on your wrist. It’s a scene that never get olds.
Introduced in the late 1970s as an addition to the Louis Cartier Collection, this model represents a bold statement from Cartier during the height of the quartz crisis. While the world rushed toward inexpensive, highly accurate quartz movements, Cartier doubled down on its heritage, re-introducing luxurious mechanical watches crafted from precious metals. The Riviera, with its ultra-thin case, is powered by the reliable Caliber 107, a hand-wound movement that allows for the slim, elegant profile that makes this piece so distinctive.
The watch’s 18K yellow gold case is paired with a sleek black leather strap, perfectly complementing the black Roman numerals and chemin de fer minute track on the dial. Collectors prize the “PARIS” signature on the dial, indicating its origin from Cartier’s renowned Parisian boutique—a detail that elevates its desirability even further. The beaded crown, topped with a sapphire cabochon, gives a nod to Cartier's jewellery origins.
Unlike many of Cartier’s linear and square designs, the Riviera stands out as a rare round-cased model. Its midsize profile, typical of the era, harks back to a time when gentlemen’s watches were refined and modestly sized, adding to its appeal as a classic dress piece.
Whether in the serene morning light of Nice or in the heart of a bustling city, this Cartier Riviera is a tribute to quiet elegance, sophistication, and the art of living well.
The watch is in good condition given its age.
The case lines are still present with some hairline scratches throughout. The hallmarks on the case back are deep and sharp.
The dial has aged with light signs of spidering which is expected of these vintage lacquered dials. You have to look for it with a loupe to see it.
The glass and sapphire cabochon is in great condition.
The leather strap is excellent and the gold plated Cartier buckle has some light peeling throughout.
