The Artful Italian.
Benvenuto Cellini was a divine goldsmith of the Italian Renaissance. He perfected new methods of engraving, casting metal and setting precious stones that delighted every king he served. His obsession over every shape, line and detail set his work eons apart from everybody else. He was a true master.
While his craftsmanship bore many fruits, his hot blooded passion cursed him to frequent run-ins with the law. Only a few of his golden sculptures survived as many were mysteriously melted down over the years. We like to think that they were re-spawned to create tribute masterpieces like the one we have here today - the Rolex Cellini.
The Cellini collection is a special segment of Rolex's catalogue that covers an eclectic array of wristwatches. It was originally conceived in the 1960s as an alternative to the brand's purpose-built tool watches. So while the Submariners, GMTs and Explorers were for rugged adventure seekers, the Cellinis were dressy art pieces for the classic gentleman.
This particular reference, the 4370, is a prime example of Rolex's adventures into the arts. It is simply stunning isn't it? Made out of solid 18K yellow gold, it weighs a staggering 124 grams. The case design has a geometric play to it. The outline is a hexagon shape with an octagonal bezel placed right on top of it. Gerald Genta's design language from the King Midas and Royal Oak are alive and well in this timepiece. While the sharp case lines are masculine and powerful, it is proportionally balanced with its elegant touches - a two-tone minimalist dial, roman numerals and an ultra thin profile. My favourite detail is the string of ROLEX that quietly fills the inner track of the champagne dial. Barely noticeable with the naked eye, it is an experience best enjoyed under a loupe.
The integrated bracelet continues the geometric aesthetic with its flat links and slightly bevelled edges. The president-style bracelet tapers across the wrist and conceals the deployant clasp behind the iconic Rolex crown.
Although it is an all-gold piece, it surprisingly doesn't scream for attention due to its brushed finish and compact 33mm size. However, those who happen to catch a glimpse of your wrist will share the same reaction royalty did with Cellini's masterpieces centuries ago. Enjoy responsibly.
Overall the watch is in great condition.
The case shows light signs of wear. It retains all of its sharp edges and doesn't appear to have been polished in the past. All of the hallmarks on the watch are crisp and present. There is a deeper scratch hidden between the 12 o' clock lug.
The crystal and dial are both mint.
The original Rolex 18K yellow gold integrated bracelet is in great condition with little to no stretch. Signs of wear shown by the hairline marks throughout the bracelet.
The manual movement has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
