The Godfather Returns.
A true Capo dei capi doesn't need others to know he's the boss. In fact, they would rather have people believe that the louder one in the group is the leader. Carrying themselves discreetly and staying away from the spotlight are some of their subtle tells. Another one is wearing this watch.
Hailing from the King Midas line originally designed by Gerald Genta, this 1976 Rolex is a forgotten gem within the catalogue. And for good reason - it carries a level of class that only a few can pull off. It's unique but classically tasteful.
Without a doubt, the stand out feature of this timepiece is the burlwood dial. Its rich colour shows off swirls of natural wood grain that compliment the gold print and indices. Rolex was known to experiment with exotic materials and this is a true example of its creative era.
The asymmetrical 18K yellow gold case allows it to be worn on both the left and right wrist. The top surface is finished in a distinct hobnail style (Clous de Paris) that looks like a collection of tiny pyramids. The winding crown is located at the 9 hour marker that blends-in with the lines of the case.
To me, the most under-appreciated aspect of this timepiece is its original crocodile leather strap. Made by Rolex, it is completely custom to this model. It is the closest thing you will get to an integrated bracelet in leather form. It starts at full width of the 28mm case and tapers all the way down to 12mm, only to be fastened by its 18K gold Rolex buckle. This dramatic design detail is elegant, understated and visually makes the timepiece wear much larger.
This timepiece is the silent power statement respected by all.
The watch retains its sharp geometric lines with little to no signs of polishing. The hallmarks are still visible and the case shows off patina in select areas for a charming touch.
The wood dial is in mint condition with no cracks or blemishes to note.
The sapphire crystal, hands and indices are mint and free from any distractions.
The original crocodile leather strap is in excellent condition with its original gold printing still visible on the Rolex logo. Very lightly worn. There is a tiny nick near the bottom left corner of the watch - you have to look hard for it to see it.
The manual wind movement is running strong and keeping accurate time.
Overall this timepiece is in incredible condition given its age.
