The Hobnail Master.
Vacheron Constantin has spent centuries perfecting the art of watchmaking, balancing refinement with just enough individuality to keep things interesting. The reference 7390 is a prime example of that philosophy. It carries the traditional craftsmanship the brand is known for but adds just the right amount of flair to stand out without ever trying too hard.
This 1970s creation is defined by its hobnail, or clous de Paris, finish. The dial is covered in a field of pyramid-like patterns, a texture that doesn’t just sit still but actively plays with the light. Unlike most designs that keep the hobnail motif confined to the bezel or dial, this execution extends across all four sides of the case as well, making it an incredibly rare find. The result is a watch that changes in appearance throughout the day, shifting between sharp reflections and soft glows depending on how it catches the light.
The 18K yellow gold case is shaped like an old-school television, giving it a distinct profile. Measuring 31mm across, it wears significantly larger thanks to its square proportions. The date window, framed with an emboldened border, adds a layer of practicality while keeping the dial beautifully balanced. The ultra-thin Caliber K1120 automatic movement keeps everything running smoothly, adjusted to temperature and five positions for optimal precision. It is powered by a 21K gold rotor, which is as impressive mechanically as it is visually. That much watchmaking finesse packed into such a slim case is something only a handful of brands could achieve at the time.
The finer details round out the experience. The Maltese cross crown is a subtle but unmistakable mark of Vacheron Constantin. The watch is fitted with a black alligator strap, secured by an 18K VC-signed buckle, keeping things both elegant and comfortable. The condition is remarkable, a testament to both its build quality and the care it has received over the years.
This is classic Vacheron with an edge. It has all the hallmarks of the brand’s elegance but leans just enough into the unexpected with its textured execution and bold case shape. Whether worn casually or with a suit, it remains as timeless as it is distinctive.
